General Information On Dishwasher Parts

By Myrtle Cash

The machines that are commonly used to clean eating utensils and dishes are dishwashers. Typically these are installed in homes, and may also be found in certain restaurants. Dishwasher parts will vary by features, model and manufacturer, but there are some standard components.

Unlike dishwashing that is done by hand, which usually involves a lot of scrubbing to remove dirt, these units clean by spraying water on the dishes. Typically this water is heated between 130 and 170 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale. Lower temperatures may be used for delicate cycles. There are various soaps and formulas, which come in many different forms, that are used to clean the dishes too.

Water is pumped into the device using one or many rotating spray arms. These blast the dishes with the cleaning solution too. When the wash cycle is finished, the water is drained out and more is added for rinsing. Once rinsing is completed, a heat element at the bottom of the structure heats air to dry the items.

These units vary in size, sound damping, capacity, plumbing and features. Machines do not always have the same place settings so those looking to purchase a new washer should check that it is compatible with the dishes they own. Plates or dishes that are not of the typical size might not fit properly in their allotted compartments. Machines are often placed in kitchens and sometimes between cabinets. Portable versions are also an option.

Generally, all modern versions include a drop-down, front-panel door. This door allows for full access to the tub and its contents. Inside the machine there are usually racks, also called baskets. Typically there are two or three of these, which are used for storing the dishes. Cutlery baskets are available on most models too. Some of the more high-quality versions feature hard food disposal structures. These serve as mini waste disposals and eliminate large amounts of waste from washes.

Typically the inside of these units is made from plastic or stainless steel. The stainless versions are able to resist hard water and offer better heat preservation and sound damping. Some other parts commonly seen on these structures: sensors, valves, wax motors, electromechanical rotary switches, inline water heaters and bimetal switches. Many of the parts needed for these machines can be installed or replaced by the homeowner. In fact, most home or hardware stores offer replacements. Owners may have to refer to the product manual to find out what specific item is needed.

The model and manufacturer of the dishwasher will determine the parts that are used. Some units have more features that require more pieces. Others are quite simple and old-fashioned in their design and have basic functions. Those looking to purchase a new washer should research the different types available to find out what works for their needs and fits in their budget.

Numerous dishwasher parts are used on these modern mechanical devices. Usually the pieces are determined by the manufacturer and model of a device. These machines are used to wash dishes and utensils. Baskets or racks, spray arms and front-panel doors are a few examples of standard components of dishwashers.
